Function of the CALM Buoy

A CALM Buoy is used for offloading oil and gas from the production platform to the shuttle tanker. These buoys are used to keep a safe distance between the production / storage facility and the shuttle tanker. A safe distance is very important in a harsh environment. In such an environment it is very difficult to keep the position of a shuttle tanker. To prevent collisions between the shuttle tanker and the production platform CALM buoys are used.

A CALM buoy is an external unit shown picture which is located a couple of hundred meters away from the production platform. This distance is depending on the environment. The production platform is connected to the buoy by using a pipeline. To keep the buoy in place it is moored to the seabed using anchors and catenaries. The connection between the shuttle tanker and the buoy will be established by using a flexible hose. Hoses can be either floating or (partly) submerged.
